How to Pack for Mykonos

My first time in Mykonos was in April of 2016, I was super excited to visit the island. I heard so much about it’s beautiful beaches and party life. So I did what most girls do when packing to go to a party island, I packed my favorite heels! Ladies, we love our shoes and if you’re like me, the only part of the outfit you care about is your shoes! Lol

My first night in Mykonos town, we were invited to a grand opening of a boutique, the invitation said “drinks and music” so I came prepared, or so I thought, to dance the night away. Little did I know that the town of Mykonos is for pedestrians only therefore walking is your only way to get around, and on top of that, the ground is not a nice paved smooth walkway, it's all beautiful cobble stones which is not heel friendly. I held on to my partners arm the whole time as I still tripped 3x in my 6 inch heels! What happened all summer long? I wore the same flip-flops and sneakers because the rest of my shoes were all heels. Short heel, wedges, platforms, stilettos, etc., ARE NOT FOR MYKONOS, or anywhere in Greece. Trust me on that, the infrastructure in Greece matches that of a developing country.

My heart literally aches when I see ladies all dressed up wearing heels in the town. Firstly, they end up holding on to someone the whole night because aint nobody wants to break an ankle. Secondly, you miss all the beauty and action of the town because you're busy looking down at the ground to make sure your steps are well calculated. It's a serious thing ladies! Therefore my biggest suggestions and advice for when asked "how do I pack for Mykonos? what should I wear?" The only answer is DO NOT BRING HEELS TO MYKONOS. Sandals, flip flops, sneakers, and booties, mix it up and play with your styles, I promise you'll still feel and look beautiful without heels.

So how do you pack for Mykonos? Everything and anything goes, there are no rules of course. Mykonos is regarded as the "Island of the winds" be it by day or by night, it's almost always very windy here. Hence my hair always being in a braid or a ponytail. I recommend packing a light sweater or stole for the evenings. Speaking of the wind, while it can be slightly discomforting at times, it's the best thing when you're partying, raise them hands up and give those pits a nice refreshing breeze! It feels great haha!

Just as I mentioned, its windy throughout the day as well, and depending on which beach you're on and the direction of the wind, it can get chilly when you come out of the water. To avoid being uncomfortable I always bring 2 bathing suits with me so I can change into when I'm eating or lounging around the beach bar/pool. I used to watch my Greek friends do this and thought they were crazy. I do not like to carry any extras, I like to pack very light and keep it simple, but this little hack is very well appreciated. Trust me on that.

Also, lately some beach bars like Principote do not allow you to enter the restaurant in a bikini, you have to be somewhat dressed. I recommend bringing a couple of pareos or beach cover ups that you can quickly slip on.

For my ladies who love hats, Mykonos is not the place for them pretty fedoras and sun hats. Why do I say this? Because I've lost 3 of my Panama hats to the wind! I love hats, they are a great accessory and more importantly, very practical for shade in the sun. Being that its super windy on the island, I end up babysitting the hat to make sure no one steps on it and I don't forget it at the end of the day. Just sharing my 2 cents on that, not a rule like the heels, more of a suggestion.

Ladies don't freak out if you forgot to pack anything, there are tons of shops on the island where you can buy almost everything here. I actually prefer shopping on the island, who doesn't want to come home with some local goodies?
